1859 DR. KITTO BOOK COLLECTION
1859 DR. KITTO BOOK COLLECTION
Rare collectible 8 volume (complete) set of Daily Bible Illustrations by Dr. John Kitto published in 1859 by William Oliphant and Co., Edinburgh. Beautiful half morocco leather binding with gilt detailing, pebbled burgundy hard-cover boards, and marbled endpapers and edges.
Dr. Kitto (1804-1854), the deaf son of a Cornish stonemason, was a significant and prolific contributor to Christian scholarship in his generation whose work contributed in helping evangelicals defend the Bible against the attack of liberal critics. Before his death he completed a total of twenty three books of which Charles Spurgeon considered the Daily Bible Illustrations to be "more interesting than any novel that was ever written, and as instructive as the heaviest theology." (condensed from Wikipedia)
These Bible illustrations or exegeses are meant to be daily readings for one year in morning and evening series "especially designed for the family circle," and are replete with illustrations and maps. A must have set for the avid Bible scholar library.
