REWORKED MONOLITH SHOULDER BAG
REWORKED MONOLITH SHOULDER BAG
20s/30s cotton Monolith Portland cement bag, reworked in-house into a one-of-a-kind washable shoulder tote.
During the time of the Great Depression (shortly after these bags were originally manufactured), nothing was left to waste. People were forced to rely on their wits to survive. Cotton sacks were turned into utilitarian pieces like dresses, underwear, towels, curtains, quilts, and other household necessities.
Using this mindset as our guide, we set out to rework these old cement bags into something more practical. With Oregon’s recent single-use bag ban, we couldn’t think of anything much more useful than a foldable/washable shoulder bag.
Inspired by the designs of early century newsboy bags, we utilized almost every last scrap of fabric from these cotton sacks to create a shoulder bag that we believe is as useful and sustainable as it gets.
*Due to the nature of repurposing old materials, each bag will have it’s own unique natural wear and discoloration and size will vary slightly from bag to bag.
